about

'quiet citadel' is a slow meditation on how we care for each other.

In late 2019, I lived on the grounds of the Kirkbride Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota as part of an arts fellowship. From 1890-2005, the Kirkbride provided mental health care to thousands of patients. It now sits empty, with Fergus Falls residents wondering what to do with the historic facility.

While at the Kirkbride, I made music with local residents, sampled secondhand cassette tapes, and collected field recordings from around the grounds. These sounds became 'quiet citadel' - a 30-minute sonic meditation on mental health care in the U.S.

Meant as a companion to the album, the zine offers historical anecdotes about the Kirkbride and includes prompts for imagining the Kirkbride's future. When you purchase a tape, you'll receive a free physical copy of the zine.

The track titles are quotes from people connected to the Kirkbride throughout time:

1. "Remember, these are dances in a hospital." -hospital administrator (1933), referring to the dances that hospital staff hosted for patients

2. "I don't define mental illness, I don't know what it is." -director of the mental illness program (1974), showcasing the unknowns of mental health care

3. "These are our castles." -relative of Thomas Kirkbride (2015), the architect of the 'Kirkbride model' for mental health care

4. "I really hope it's still there." -resident of Fergus Falls (2019), speaking of the Kirkbride's potential demolition

Mastered by Jonathan Waldo. Many thanks to Springboard for the Arts (Naomi, Dominic, and Michele), Corrector Records (Jonathan and Will), the 'quiet citadel' ensemble (Dominic, Dove, Klara, Nick, Reno, and Sarah), and the Otter Tail County Historical Society (Kathy and Chris).
